Report by Michael J Clarke DTM, Area 51 Governor
If you were there you know what an excellent Division E speech contest we had yesterday in Harrogate. And if you weren’t there – sorry you missed a real treat.
The quality of the speeches was superb and the enthusiasm and enjoyment from delegates was so inspiring – even to an old TM like me.
Congratulations got to Gayna Cooper of Warrington Toastmasters for winning the Humorous Speaking contest with Simon Heal of A1 Speakers coming second and Sanat Shelat of Heart of England Speakers coming third.
And congratulations to Marie-Claire Carlyle of Warrington Toastmasters for winning the Table Topics contest with Tom Fenwick-Brown of A1 Speakers coming second and Gavin Yearwood coming third.
Well done to all the contestants for making it a brilliant day.
A big thank you also must go to John Cox, Area 6 Governor, who delivered an excellent workshop on writing and delivering a winning speech. Loads of great ideas from John and the delegates.
I’d personally like to thank the following
- John Cox for his, and Roma’s support
- Louisa Hitchen, Division E Governor, for letting me get on with organising the event
- Phil Heath for a provocative and inspiring speech on behalf of the District Leadership Team
- Gillian Caldicott and Phil Morris for being great Timekeepers – most of the time!
- A1 Speakers for their members being a brilliant support with Peter Ayers as Contest Chair, Mick Rickwood & Les Hodgson and excellent Sergeant at Arms and others taking key roles
- Warrington Toastmasters for the loudest supporters I heard in ages on top of winning both contests. My ears are now clear and my hearing is so much better after the whooping and a hollering from the supporters. Here is a club that eighteen months ago had eight members – now they have fifty and have to meet weekly and the members are loving it. A lesson for the rest of us to learn from.
John Cox also got us all enthused with details of next May’s District Conference that is going to be in Nottingham. Rarely will Conference be so close and with such a range of accommodation to allow you to choose the cost.
Put 15th – 17th May 2015 in your diary if you want to have a great weekend
And before that the winners from yesterday need your support in Belfast. I’ve attached the flyer (click to view/download) for the event and please note the Early Bird price has been held and if ten of you get together each will get a 10% discount to each (or buy ten get one free).
Thanks to all who attended and had a great day and to those who didn’t make it – maybe next time. It will be for your benefit.

Message from Frederika Roberts, Webmaster & Social Media Manager, Doncaster Speakers
It was a delight to attend the Division E Contest yesterday and I’d highly recommend you attend future ones whenever you can. It’s great to see how the quality of speeches (both prepared ones and impromptu Table Topics) goes up at each contest level! I would also like to add a massive ‘well done’ to our very own Andrew Miller, who delivered a great Table Topic. He faced very stiff competition and although he is not going to represent Doncaster Speakers in Belfast, he did our club proud!

Humorous Speech & Table Topics Contest Results
Club Contest Chair, Gail Powell, said about the Club Contest on 8th September:
“It was, as usual a fun evening, especially as it was the humorous speaking competition. We only had two contenders for the speaker’s competition – Jean Stewart and Sean Gordon – both would have done us immensely proud at the next stage, but in the end Jean’s inimitable style won her the first place. The Table Topics competition was well represented with 5 competitors. It was a very close call for who came first with our President Andrew Miller getting to the post first. His comfortable and accomplished ability to turn a couple of minutes, on an unknown subject, into a mini-speech shone through. The subject of the Table Topics (set by the Contest Chair for the evening Gail Powell) was – If you had to wear a badge with only 5 words on it what would it say and why? Now there’s food for thought!”
The winners (Jean Stewart for Humorous Speaking and Andrew Miller for Table Topics) then competed against the winners from the other Area 15 clubs (Leeds City Toastmasters, Sheffield Speakers, White Rose Speakers, Huddersfield Cummins Toastmasters, Hull Speakers) in our Area 15 Autumn Speech contest, which we hosted at The Regent Hotel again yesterday.
Frederika Roberts, who attended the Area 15 Autumn Speech Contest, said:
“It was a fantastic day with lots of fun/laughter but also many opportunities to learn from watching all the winners from the different Area 15 clubs and network with Toastmasters from outside our own club. Attending Area/Division/District contests is a brilliant way to observe and learn from great speakers.
The judges had a challenging task as the level was very high in both contests.”
Jean Stewart and Andrew Miller made Doncaster Speakers proud: Jean placed 3rd in the Humorous Speech contest, having faced stiff competition, and Andrew Miller placed first in an equally challenging Table Topics contest.
Andrew will now go on to represent Doncaster Speakers in the Division E Table Topics Contest in Harrogate on 26th October!
Go along and support Andrew, watch some great speakers, learn, laugh and network:
