Doncaster Speakers Meeting Report | Monday 27th October 2014

General Evaluator’s Report | 27th October 2014 | By Trevor Hatib (visiting guest from Leeds City Toastmasters)

“Hallowe’en”

Doncaster Speakers | Halloween Themed Evening
Spooky Speakers! L-R: Jane Sharp, Bridget Pearson, Lisa Johnson, Karry Chadburn, Adrian Terrace

As a visiting Toastmaster (from Leeds City Toastmasters) I was asked to undertake the General Evaluator role at the meeting, which also gave me the privilege of writing this report.

To begin with, I thought that the Hallowe’en themed evening was great – well done to all those (not me unfortunately) who made the effort to wear very ghoulish costumes. Karry Chadburn as Sergeant at Arms led from the front with a superb witch’s costume and gore painted face – very impressive.  Lisa Johnson, equipped with obligatory witch’s hat, then took over as a very capable and confident Toastmaster for the evening.

We had four excellent speeches by Derek Lucien (“Just a Pair of Normal Cyslists”); Derek Badger (“Friend”), Trevor Hatib (“Keep off the Pavement”) and Andrew Miller (“IT”), which had us all scared at one moment and then roaring with laughter the next. Although Andrew won Best Speaker, they were all really good quality speeches.

After the break we had the evaluations of the speeches with Richard Bluck, Bridget Pearson, Shelagh Jones and Jamie Godfrey giving some great feedback to the speakers. Well done in particular to Bridget for undertaking an evaluation for the first time and doing such an impressive job.

Jamie then led a very entertaining session of table topics, with contestants being given a (sometimes) spooky object and having to pick up the story from the previous speaker. This can be challenging exercise but everyone, especially guests*, delivered some truly impressive impromptu speeches. Although Andrew won best TT speaker it must have been a very close call.

Richard, doubling up as Ah Counter, then gave us some great feedback on our use of crutch words before Derek Badger, doubling up as Grammarian, told us about our use of grammar and the word of the day (consternation).

Last, but by no means least, a special mention for Jane Sharp, who did a great job as Timekeeper.  Jane, like Karry has just joined the club, and it’s fantastic to see new members stepping out of their comfort zones and taking on roles – well done.

Thanks to Andrew, for inviting me, Lisa, for running the meeting, and to everyone else for making it such an entertaining evening. You should be proud of having such a wonderful, friendly club and I look forward to visiting again in the future.

Trevor Hatib

Visiting guest from Leeds City Toastmasters

* In addition to Trevor visiting from Leeds City Toastmasters, we had four other guests who were new to Toastmasters (Dawn McDonagh, Sally Holmes, Mel Oates, Adrian Terrace) and three of them took part in Table Topics!  Well done for taking the plunge 🙂

Division E Contest | 26th October 2014

Report by Michael J Clarke DTM, Area 51 Governor

If you were there you know what an excellent Division E speech contest we had yesterday in Harrogate. And if you weren’t there – sorry you missed a real treat.

The quality of the speeches was superb and the enthusiasm and enjoyment from delegates was so inspiring – even to an old TM like me.

Congratulations got to Gayna Cooper of Warrington Toastmasters for winning the Humorous Speaking contest with Simon Heal of A1 Speakers coming second and Sanat Shelat of Heart of England Speakers coming third.

Well done to all the contestants for making it a brilliant day.

A big thank you also must go to John Cox, Area 6 Governor, who delivered an excellent workshop on writing and delivering a winning speech. Loads of great ideas from John and the delegates.

I’d personally like to thank the following

  • John Cox for his, and Roma’s support
  • Louisa Hitchen, Division E Governor, for letting me get on with organising the event
  • Phil Heath for a provocative and inspiring speech on behalf of the District Leadership Team
  • Gillian Caldicott and Phil Morris for being great Timekeepers – most of the time!
  • A1 Speakers for their members being a brilliant support with Peter Ayers as Contest Chair, Mick Rickwood & Les Hodgson and excellent Sergeant at Arms and others taking key roles
  • Warrington Toastmasters for the loudest supporters I heard in ages on top of winning both contests. My ears are now clear and my hearing is so much better after the whooping and a hollering from the supporters. Here is a club that eighteen months ago had eight members – now they have fifty and have to meet weekly and the members are loving it. A lesson for the rest of us to learn from.

John Cox also got us all enthused with details of next May’s District Conference that is going to be in Nottingham. Rarely will Conference be so close and with such a range of accommodation to allow you to choose the cost.

Put 15th – 17th May 2015 in your diary if you want to have a great weekend

And before that the winners from yesterday need your support in Belfast. I’ve attached the flyer (click to view/download) for the event and please note the Early Bird price has been held and if ten of you get together each will get a 10% discount to each (or buy ten get one free).

Thanks to all who attended and had a great day and to those who didn’t make it – maybe next time. It will be for your benefit.

Cheers

Michael J. Clarke DTM, Area 51 Governor

Message from Frederika Roberts, Webmaster & Social Media Manager, Doncaster Speakers

It was a delight to attend the Division E Contest yesterday and I’d highly recommend you attend future ones whenever you can.  It’s great to see how the quality of speeches (both prepared ones and impromptu Table Topics) goes up at each contest level!  I would also like to add a massive ‘well done’ to our very own Andrew Miller, who delivered a great Table Topic.  He faced very stiff competition and although he is not going to represent Doncaster Speakers in Belfast, he did our club proud!

What a fantastic Open Evening we had at Doncaster Speakers tonight!

We had 10 guests – so many we had to add extra chairs! – and the room was buzzing with positive energy, fun and laughter.

Bridget delivering her prepared speechSean delivering his prepared speech

The prepared speeches (Sean Gordon did speech no. 7 – “Reach for the Sky” – and Bridget Pearson speech no. 2 – “Service!, SERVICE!”) were of the usual very high standard.  Well planned & delivered, entertaining and informative.  We now know a lot more about hot-air balloons and eating Chinese food in China!

The Education slot was presented by Gail Powell with some help from Bridget Pearson and Frederika Roberts.  Lisa Johnson’s Table Topics session had us all in stitches!  The topic of bizarre jobs we could be being interviewed for, giving us the task of answering what transferrable skills we have we can use towards them and adding innovative ideas, worked very well and tied in beautifully with the theme of “opportunity”.

Join us for our next, Hallowe’en-themed meeting on 27th October!

Humorous Speech & Table Topics Contest Results

We held our Doncaster Speakers (club-level) Autumn Contest on 8th September: The Humorous Speaking Contest and the Table Topics Contest.

Club Contest Chair, Gail Powell, said about the Club Contest on 8th September:

“It was, as usual a fun evening, especially as it was the humorous speaking competition. We only had two contenders for the speaker’s competition – Jean Stewart and Sean Gordon – both would have done us immensely proud at the next stage, but in the end Jean’s inimitable style won her the first place. The Table Topics competition was well represented with 5 competitors. It was a very close call for who came first with our President Andrew Miller getting to the post first. His comfortable and accomplished ability to turn a couple of minutes, on an unknown subject, into a mini-speech shone through. The subject of the Table Topics (set by the Contest Chair for the evening Gail Powell) was – If you had to wear a badge with only 5 words on it what would it say and why? Now there’s food for thought!”

The winners (Jean Stewart for Humorous Speaking and Andrew Miller for Table Topics) then competed against the winners from the other Area 15 clubs (Leeds City Toastmasters, Sheffield Speakers, White Rose Speakers, Huddersfield Cummins Toastmasters, Hull Speakers) in our Area 15 Autumn Speech contest, which we hosted at The Regent Hotel again yesterday.

Frederika Roberts, who attended the Area 15 Autumn Speech Contest, said:

“It was a fantastic day with lots of fun/laughter but also many opportunities to learn from watching all the winners from the different Area 15 clubs and network with Toastmasters from outside our own club.  Attending Area/Division/District contests is a brilliant way to observe and learn from great speakers.

The judges had a challenging task as the level was very high in both contests.”

Doncaster Speakers Meeting Report | Monday 18th August 2014

Say It With a Quote

quote What a masterful topic we had this week from Richard Bluck our Toastmaster. ‘Say it with a quote’ and what was ingenious was the way Richard managed to weave this into many of his  introductions as he effortlessly guided us through the evening’s Agenda. I always feel more relaxed when Richard is at the helm, largely due to his calm delivery and attention to detail –  well done Richard.

The meeting was started on time from our very able Sgt at Arms for the evening Sean Gordon. Our Time Keeper Jean Stewart brought her usual inimitable style to the role as she explained  the importance of keeping time. Our ‘Ah Counter’ for the evening was Derek Lucian who used an excellent way of feeding back on all our ‘ums’ and ‘ahs’ for the evening by using charts. He  kept his delivery specific to the people who had overdone their crutch words and noises and in his introduction gave everyone a tip on how to avoid using so many ums and ahs – the  answer to use more gestures!  He had taken this idea from this month’s Toastmaster magazine so get reading everyone as there are lots of great tips and tools to be find in your free  monthly mag.

Our President Andrew Miller was Grammarian for the evening and the word of the day was UTTER or UTTERANCE.  Andrew’s ability to use excellent language himself held now bounds and  he talked about ‘an almighty avalanche of alliteration’ – see what he did there J He observed well and gave out some great recommendations.

We only had one speech this evening, but it was indeed a ‘good un’ – Jean practised her competition speech ‘Hooray, Getting Older’, for the upcoming humorous speech competition. What a great idea as she received plenty of feedback and said it really helped. Of course she was fabulous and we look forward to her entry on Monday 8th September.

Shelagh Jones, our VP of Education, delivered our first in the series of ‘Moments of Truth’ education slots. As always the preparation was excellent and Shelagh even managed to stay in time despite getting lots of feedback from the audience. Interesting and well led Shelagh as always. Shelagh also had a dual role as Table Topics master where she truly rose to the occasion using quotations to help lead us all through some really great topics.

Last, but by no means least, Jamie Godfrey had two roles and both as evaluators. First of all Jamie evaluate Jean’s speech and used the ballot sheet for the competition in which to judge is feedback. Jamie used no notes to give his feedback, which in itself is an exceptional art to be able to do this and remember all the detail, but as a seasoned and competition winning evaluator Jamie breezed through an informative and commanding delivery. He used the juxtaposition of comparing Jean to Helen Mirren on the one hand and Norah Batty on the other – a great visualisation to point out her strengths and weaknesses. It is not surprising that Jamie won Best Evaluator for his role.

Jamie also effortlessly took us through all the evaluations for Table Topics as well. He began with evaluating Jean as the TT Master and how she described the role very well. She also used a clipboard which saved messing with the lectern which can get moved around quite a bit with this part of the evening. Jamie was humorous in his delivery with great observations – his delivery was a perfect marriage of observations and stagecraft – commends and recommends. Well done Jamie it’s great to have you back in the fold after a short absence, we have missed your energy and excellence.

All in all it was, as usual, a great meeting with several new guests and members attending helping to start the journey of growing the club this year in line with Andrew’s vision for Doncaster Toastmasters 2014/2015.

We hope to see you all at the next meeting which is the Humorous Speech Contest if only to come and watch and support and have a really good laugh.

General Evaluator – Gail Powell

Truth

Truth

We had an excellent Doncaster Speakers meeting last night 11th August 2014. Although holidays numbers were a little on the small side we were graced by four welcome visitors;     Fawad, Cath, Jane and Simeon that swelled the numbers.

The meeting was called to order in a very professional manner by Lisa Johnson who introduced Gail Powell as our Toastmaster for the evening. Gail explained that Doncaster  Speakers is part of a worldwide organisation in over 122 countries with over 292,000 members. She also welcomed our guests and introduced the committee.

Gail introduced three members who would assist her run the meeting; firstly, Andrew Miller who explained the importance of timekeeping in both Toastmasters and work and          life in general. Next was Lisa Johnson, was our Ah Counter, who clearly, but succinctly, explained that she would be looking out for all the crutch words we tend to use. Finally,        Alison Kitchman, who as Grammarian, gave us a Word of the Day; Credible or Credibility. This was the word that we should try to incorporate into our speeches, she also said she would be reporting back on  good  grammar during the meeting – not sure if that is good grammar!

We had one speaker, Bridget Pearson, who was doing her Icebreaker entitled ‘Help! My brain is dissolving!’. Bridget was introduced by her evaluator Jean Stewart. The speech was very entertaining and was an excellent first speech – we look forward to hearing more from Bridget very soon. Jean was very honest but very supportive in her evaluation and I’m sure Bridget will take her feedback and work on being even better next time. As the only speaker Bridget won Best Speaker.

One of the key ways all clubs can measure their strength and development is the ‘Moments of Truth’ programme which Shelagh Jones outlined in her Education session. She told us how she would be referring back to the programme throughout the year and how it works towards the Distinguished club Programme each year.

Our Table Topics Master for the evening was Derek Badger. Before he started, one of our guests asked to speak. Fawad Shah told us he is a stammerer and on the Maguire programme. He wished to develop a  career in the legal profession and saw Toastmasters as a way to help with his stammering (not that we noticed any last night) and with his career. He is to be congratulated on having the guts to stand up in front of an audience he didn’t know and speak regardless of his challenges – that’s what Doncaster Speakers is all about – to give support and help to everyone wishing to speak in public for whatever reason.

The theme of Table Topics was taking phrases from Shakespeare and explaining them as a book or whatever we wished to. All turned their topic into a personal experience ranging from Michael J Clarke talking about being an idiot to Alison Kitchman talking about the death of her Gran’s dog Dusty. The Best Table Topics Speaker though was from one of the visitors; Cath Winfield, who took us back to the seventies and three day week and how the world changed under candlelight.

Table Topics was evaluated by Andrew Miller who spent time giving feedback to the TT Master and to each speaker. He was followed by Lisa Johnson who gave specific feedback to each member on the level of their crutch words of which there weren’t that many. Alison Kitchman gave feedback on the grammar used in the meeting and who had used the Word of the Day. Michael J. Clarke won with ten uses of the word; however it has to be said he did rather overuse the word if we’re being honest.

Best Evaluator was won by Andrew Miller. Michael J Clarke was General Evaluator and took some time to feedback on the whole meeting saying that this is a Class Club, a Quality Club with excellent meetings.

After some announcements and awards from the President Andrew Miller the meeting was closed with the next meeting next week due to Bank Holiday.

Personally, I’ve missed meetings for the last couple of months and it was a real pleasure to return – it won’t be so long to my next meeting visit.

Michael J. Clarke – General Evaluator

The next meeting is this coming Monday 18th August due to the Bank Holiday the following Monday.
